Bite-Size Semiotics

An undirected exclamation

This sign was amusing to me. It was on the second floor of a Prisma supermarket in Espoo, Finland, and indexed a location with discounted things. But it did not say "Discounts here", or the standard Finnish "ALE!", or even use the more multilingual percent sign based approaches like "-20%" or even just "%". No. Instead it just says "!".

The colors are on brand, and the supermarket context does make it clear what is signaled. And yet to me it just felt like someone would just give a quick "Aaa!!!" shout with no explanation.
