This post is part of our Boring series, where one Tuesdays we sometimes post analyses on signs we did not find particularly interesting. The idea is to offset personal biases.

Here we have a thermometer signaling the temperature of 32.4 degrees Celsius. I was holding the tip of the thermometer earlier, so it's higher than your average room temperature of about 21-24 degrees, while lower than the human temperature of 36-37 degrees.
The thermometer uses symbolic numbers to index the temperature at the tip of the thermometer. Scollon & Wong-Scollon discuss at length on how the position of a sign in the world carries a lot of its meaning. The thermometer might be a sort of extremal example of this.
