Modification making the sign more permanent

IMG20260509161927.webp

This is a paper sign taped to a recyclable bottle return machine1 in Espoo, Finland. The sign says "The bottle return machine is out of order. Repair ordered 1.4. Right there on the left is a new machine" with the date "1.4." drawn over with a black marker.

What caught my attention here is how this sign, which was originally clearly made for a particular event in April, has been through modification repurposed for a new usage. The underlying signal is that this kind of breakage has happened at least once before, but at least for now it is not frequent enough to warrant more than a hastily printed noted.

  1. Finland has an extensive bottle recycling system. Almost any beverage can or bottle you buy can be returned for 5-15 cents of money depending on the size of the can or bottle. They are present in pretty much any grocery store and their usage is part of the majority cultural norms.
