Servings icon

What we have here is a simple sign we saw when visiting an academical conference in Helsinki. The sign states "Servings [for] room 674" with a clipart-looking symbol of a hand holding a serving tray upon which we see a glass where liqueid is being poured. The table contained some coffee, tea, etc for conference visitors, and this sign was presumably placed there to avoid confusions as the building in question was hosting several conferences (and probably seminars) that week.

What I noted about this sign is mostly1 the sign vessel. The base format is that of a printed A4 sheet, probably self-made in something like Word, but the room number has been written in marker. So this need for marking servings is not frequent enough, at least for this particular room, to warrant a ready-made sign. But it is common enough in the building that it has been worthy to create a template and print them beforehand2. This is not surprising, as the University of Helsinki is a major university with lots of international events, but I found it fun to note what all can be gleamed from the sign vessel of a simple sign.

  1. I do also find curious the fact that the image component is not depicting static servings but the active event of pouring liquid. But I don't have much to say about that besides the observation itself.

  2. Well, I didn't check, but if it was not pre-printed, it would probably have the room number filled in as well.
